William Wragg, a senior Conservative member has admitted to providing fellow MPs’ phone numbers to someone he met on a dating app, fearing retaliation due to personal compromising content. This was after he fell victim to a honeytrap sexting scam.
This revelation follows reports of at least 12 men, including former MPs, receiving unsolicited messages and explicit images, indicating a potential scam.
Wragg disclosed his actions to The Times, expressing remorse for his vulnerability and the harm caused. Meanwhile, Leicestershire Police confirmed an investigation into one reported case linked to the incident.
The former Hazel Grove MP described his encounter with an individual on the dating app Grindr, where he shared intimate photos. Feeling manipulated and coerced, Wragg conceded to sharing some MPs’ numbers out of fear.
The unfolding scandal has raised concerns about security and privacy among Westminster figures. Several individuals reported receiving similar messages, suggesting a coordinated effort to deceive.
While sympathetic towards Wragg’s predicament, fellow MPs acknowledge the prevalence of such risks in modern politics, including cyber threats and scams. Parliamentary authorities stress the importance of digital safety and urge affected parties to seek support from security services.
