BBC apologizes to Trump over edit

The BBC has issued an apology to former US President Donald Trump over a misleading edit in its “Panorama” documentary, the broadcaster confirmed on Thursday, but insisted the matter does not constitute grounds for a defamation lawsuit

Trump has threatened to sue the BBC for $1 billion (around €860 million), alleging that the program misrepresented a speech he gave to supporters in Washington, DC, on January 6, 2021, just before Congress was set to certify Joe Biden’s 2020 election victory.

The documentary reportedly spliced together two parts of Trump’s speech that were over 50 minutes apart, giving the false impression that he was inciting the Capitol riot. It also omitted a section where Trump urged his supporters to demonstrate peacefully.

The controversy surrounding the program, which aired days before the 2024 US presidential election, has already resulted in the resignations of BBC Director-General Tim Davie and BBC News Chief Executive Deborah Turness.
