The Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Olanrewaju Oladimeji, on Tuesday, paraded 40 suspected cultists said to be members of the Eiye and Aiye Confraternities for a series of crimes ranging from armed robbery to killings within the state.
Oladimeji, who paraded them at the state police headquarters in Abeokuta, the state capital, said the suspects had been terrorising the state, especially, residents of the Sagamu Local Government Area.
He said the suspects were arrested with weapons such as eight live cartridges, daggers and cutlasses, axes, short guns, pistol and jack knives among others.
Oladimeji added that the police recovered Venza car with number plate KSF 935 HX and substances suspected to be Indian hemp from the suspects.
He said, “In our continuing clamp down on cultists who have been causing mayhem in different parts of the state, the command has taken the battle to the doorsteps of all the known cultists in the state, most especially the Sagamu area where various cult groups have been unleashing reign of terror as a result of supremacy battle amongst them.
“Having identified their various hideouts in Sagamu, Odogbolu, Ode-Remo and some other areas, the command’s Anti-Cultist Team in collaboration with other tactical teams and divisional police operatives launched an offensive against them and the result is what we are seeing here today.”
The commissioner, who added that 24 of the suspects have been charged to court, advised parents and guardians to warn their wards against criminality.
