Haiti’s Gang Leader, Ernst Julme is dead following a police operation targeting gang activity.

In Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince, violence surged on Thursday with the killing of gang leader Ernst Julme, known as Ti Greg, as political factions neared agreement on a transition council to lead the country.
Julme’s death, part of a police operation targeting gang activity, is a blow to efforts by gangs to expand their control over the city. He had recently escaped from Haiti’s largest prison during a mass breakout.

However, challenges remain as some Haitian factions struggle to unite behind the council’s formation. Cherizier, another prominent gang leader, has threatened reprisals against politicians participating in the council.
The increase in violence, including vigilantism, highlights the government’s failure to tackle crime.
Plans for an international security mission remain on hold, despite calls for swift deployment to stabilize the situation. The UN emphasizes the importance of restoring democratic institutions and protecting civilians.
Due to security concerns, foreign citizens are being evacuated from Haiti by international efforts organized by the Canadian Armed Forces and the US government. These departures highlight the urgency of the situation and the need for a coordinated response to the crisis in Haiti.
