The bill had proposed tax increases that many Kenyans felt would unfairly burden them.

In a statement at the State House, President Ruto acknowledged the concerns of the public and agreed to withdraw the bill.

He also committed to engaging with Kenyan youth to hear their perspectives and concerns, and proposed a multi-stakeholder dialogue to address issues related to public debt and the country’s future.

Additionally, President Ruto called for immediate austerity measures to reduce government spending, starting with the Presidency and extending to the entire executive branch.

These measures include reducing allocations for confidential votes, travel budgets, hospitality, and purchases of motor vehicles and renovations.
