Manchester United notched their first victory in the 2024/25 UEFA Europa League with a 2-0 win over PAOK, courtesy of a second-half brace from Amad Diallo
In a game that began sluggishly, the Ivorian winger took control after the break to secure a much-needed three points for United.
The starting lineup featured a notable defensive pairing of Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans. Lindelof, with limited game time this season, joined Evans in a stable backline that helped United avoid their recurring issue of conceding goals.
Although Andre Onana was called upon for a few key saves, United’s defense managed to contain PAOK effectively.
The first half lacked excitement, with few meaningful chances. Amad and Bruno Fernandes looked lively, though, and Amad’s penalty appeal in the 20th minute went unheeded following a VAR check.
In the second half, Amad finally broke the deadlock with an unexpected finish. Positioned at the back post, he connected with a cross, and his header looped past the keeper into the far corner. United’s attack remained somewhat fragmented, but Amad doubled the lead minutes later. After dispossessing PAOK’s Baba, he cut inside and curled a precise shot into the same corner, sending Old Trafford into celebration.
Ruud van Nistelrooy’s interim stint at United now boasts two wins and a draw, with his final game set for Sunday’s Premier League clash against Leicester City, whom United defeated 5-2 just last week.
