TikTok restores services to 170 Million US users after Trump’s promise

TikTok is resuming operations for its 170 million US users after President-elect Donald Trump announced plans to temporarily delay the app’s ban when he takes office on Monday

The Chinese-owned platform went offline for American users on Sunday, following concerns over the potential misuse of user data by Chinese authorities.

In a statement, TikTok confirmed it was “restoring service” just hours after going dark, thanking Trump for offering “the necessary clarity and assurance.” The company pledged to work with his administration on a “long-term solution” to maintain its presence in the US.

Trump, posting on Truth Social, called for the app’s immediate return, stating, “I will issue an executive order on Monday to extend the period of time before the law’s prohibitions take effect, so that we can make a deal to protect our national security.”

TikTok’s parent company, Bytedance, had previously defied a law requiring the sale of its US operations to avoid a ban. The Supreme Court upheld the law on Friday, leading to its enforcement on Sunday, which removed the app from app stores and web-hosting services.

Despite legal challenges, TikTok remains highly popular in the US, serving as a significant platform for creators and a vital tool for political campaigns to engage younger voters.

Although Trump initially supported a ban, he recently expressed a “warm spot” for TikTok, citing its role in attracting billions of views for his campaign videos during the last election.

TikTok continues to argue that the law violates the free speech rights of its American users as it works to challenge the ruling.
