The ongoing controversy surrounding gospel singers charging performance fees for church events has sparked widespread debate, with comedian IgoSave adding his voice to the discussion
The conversation began when Pastor Femi Lazarus criticized gospel artists for demanding payment to minister in churches. His remarks triggered mixed reactions, with many questioning whether gospel musicians should offer their services for free or be compensated like other professionals.
In response, IgoSave defended gospel artists, emphasizing that only pastors who have actively invested in and promoted gospel musicians should have the right to criticize them for charging fees.
He further argued that rather than relying on established gospel artists to perform for free, churches should invest in the talents within their own congregations.
He specifically referenced Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, stating:
“Pastor Chris personally promoted and invested heavily in some gospel musicians until they became internationally recognized. Only Pastor Chris or pastors who have helped gospel artists rise to fame should complain about them charging churches!”
“Other pastors should promote and invest in the talents in their churches rather than looking for already successful gospel artists, made by others, to promote their churches for free. Gospel artistes need to put food on their tables too, just like pastors who receive salaries from their churches.”
IgoSave’s comments align with the views of singer Timi Dakolo, who also defended gospel musicians’ right to charge for performances.
Dakolo argued that music is a profession requiring financial investment, and if churches cannot afford to pay external artists, they should utilize and compensate their own choir members.
