Wang Yong, Politician and former vice-chairman of the Xizang Autonomous Region government in China, has been sentenced to d3ath with a two-year reprieve for accepting bribes worth over 271 million yuan ($37.8 million)
The ruling was issued by the Chenzhou Intermediate People’s Court in Hunan Province, which also stripped Wang of his political rights for life and ordered the confiscation of all his personal assets. His illicit gains and related interests are to be turned over to the state treasury.
According to the court, between 2007 and 2023, Wang exploited various high-ranking positions—including director of the policy and regulations department of the Civil Aviation Administration’s Southwest Regional branch, party secretary and director of Guizhou’s Civil Aviation Safety Supervision Bureau, and chairman of Guizhou Airport Group—to seek undue benefits for individuals and organizations in exchange for massive bribes.
The court described his offenses as “extremely serious,” involving an “extreme” amount of money and significant damage to public resources and national interests.
However, the court acknowledged that Wang had confessed, shown remorse, pleaded guilty, and fully returned the illicit funds, which contributed to the decision to issue a suspended death sentence instead of an immediate execution.
Wang’s trial was held publicly on May 15, with over 40 people in attendance. Prosecutors presented evidence, and Wang admitted guilt and gave a final statement in court.
In China, a suspended death sentence is typically commuted to life imprisonment after two years if the convict maintains good behavior and commits no further crimes.
