Bolsonaro is the first former Brazilian president to be convicted over an attempted coup, following the January 8, 2023 attack on the Brazilian Congress, Supreme Court, and presidential palace by his supporters.

The former leader did not appear in court during the trial. Since early August, Bolsonaro has been under house arrest for violating previous court orders.

The verdict, originally scheduled for Friday, was delivered ahead of time.
