The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Northern Support Group has declared its unwavering support for the party’s Acting National Chairman, Ambassador Iliya Umar Damagum, while endorsing former President Goodluck Jonathan as its preferred presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections

This decision was contained in a communiqué released after the group’s 8th Northern Support Group Meeting, held in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State, from October 8 to 9, 2025.

According to the communiqué signed by Hon. Yusuf Abubakar, Northern Coordinator, and Hon. Adamu Ahmed Narayi, North-West Zonal Secretary, members from all northern states were present and united by the goal of strengthening and repositioning the PDP ahead of 2027.

The group commended Ambassador Damagum for his reconciliation efforts, which it said were restoring unity and discipline within the party. It also expressed optimism that with collective commitment, the PDP could reclaim power from the ruling APC at both national and state levels.

Calling for widespread mobilisation, the group described Jonathan as a unifying leader and a “symbol of peace and progress,” insisting that his return as presidential candidate was non-negotiable. It praised him as one of Nigeria’s most patriotic leaders for peacefully handing over power in 2015, adding that questions about his eligibility to contest again had already been resolved.

However, the communiqué criticised some party elders and National Working Committee (NWC) members for allegedly working against the PDP’s unity, accusing them of collaborating with the APC-led government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

It also condemned the conduct of Minister Nyesom Wike, accusing him of “sowing division” within the PDP while serving under the APC administration. The group urged Damagum to impose strict disciplinary action against any member undermining the party’s integrity or working against its interest.

Reaffirming its faith in the PDP’s grassroots strength across the North, the group called for renewed efforts to rebuild the party’s structures, restore internal discipline, and prepare for victory in 2027.

The communiqué concluded with a pledge of total loyalty to the PDP leadership and commitment to uniting the party ahead of the next general elections.
