Gospel singer Tope Alabi has shared the challenges she faced in love before finding her current husband
The singer opened up on Instagram about a confusing pattern she experienced with suitors as she approached adulthood.
According to Alabi, difficulties often arose when it came time to introduce potential partners to her parents.
“When I became an adult and it was time to take men to meet my parents, something strange always happened. The men would say they needed to pray about it, and afterward, they never contacted me again,” she revealed.
The 54-year-old composer explained that these rejections were often framed in spiritual terms. On one occasion, an intermediary told her that a suitor had consulted prophets who advised him not to pursue the relationship. Alabi recalled that “at least four men stylishly left” her in this way.
“One of our intermediaries told me that a man went to meet prophets who said I wasn’t suitable for marriage,” she said. “Would you tell me to stop appreciating God whenever I remember that? Despite all that, I eventually got married.”
Alabi explained that she eventually met her husband through her boss at work. “The man promised to marry me, and I told him, ‘That’s how all men do.’ I told him to go and inquire properly about the relationship,” she said.
Before the man could formally come for her introduction, however, her father had already given her hand in marriage to another suitor. “We stopped seeing. Although the introduction never happened, my father had already arranged my marriage before he travelled,” Alabi added.
