Nyesom Wike has strongly criticized PDP factional chairman Tanimu Turaki for publicly appealing to former U.S. President Donald Trump to intervene in Nigeria’s political affairs.
Wike described Turaki’s statements as reckless, irresponsible, and a threat to national security.
Speaking to journalists, Wike questioned why Turaki would call on a foreign leader to “save” Nigeria’s democracy when his own camp struggles to follow court rulings. He also condemned Turaki’s characterization of government actions as a “genocide against Christians.”
“You come out … to say it is not only killing — genocide against Christians. In essence, you are telling the world that what this government is doing is genocide,” Wike said.
“If we invite someone with facts, nobody would say anything. But if it is Wike, then the call is to ‘kill him.’ This is national security threats,” he added.
Wike argued that Turaki’s claims misrepresent Nigeria to the international community and exaggerate internal political tensions within the PDP. He emphasized that the country’s democracy is strong and resilient, and that the real threat comes from politicians who use inflammatory rhetoric for personal or factional gain.
“He is calling Trump to come and save their democracy when they cannot obey a simple court judgment,” Wike said, warning against allowing foreign intervention to be invoked unnecessarily.
According to Wike, political disagreements within parties should be handled internally, not broadcast in ways that could alarm the public or invite external interference. His comments underscore ongoing tensions within the PDP and the importance of responsible leadership in shaping Nigeria’s democratic narrative.
