The new England Patriots are set to release wide receiver Stefon Diggs
Despite making a run to the Super Bowl, the Patriots will not run it back with their top receiving option.
Diggs enjoyed a nice bounce-back year with the Patriots, going over 1,000 receiving yards with four touchdowns.
However, it wasn’t enough to get the Patriots their seventh Super Bowl title.
Now, Diggs will be released at the start of the new league year despite having two more years left on his deal with the Patriots.
He shared a short message on social media following the news of his release.
“Thank you for a hell of a year,” Diggs wrote on Instagram.
“We family forever @patriots.”
Diggs signed a three-year, $63.5 million deal with the Patriots in March of 2025.
Only $22.6 million of the deal was guaranteed, easing the financial burden of his release.
He will be free to sign with any team on March 11 when the new league year begins.
Diggs is currently wrapped up in some legal proceedings and pleaded not guilty to assault allegations in Massachusetts’ Dedham District Court last month.
“I don’t think there will be a [plea] deal because I don’t think he is liable or guilty in any way, shape or form,” said Mitchell Schuster, Diggs’ attorney.
The Patriots released a statement in support of Diggs while he was still rostered on the team.
More hearings are set to take place in the future.
