Borussia Dortmund midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka has decided to represent Austria internationally instead of England, making the switch ahead of the upcoming World Cup
Austria, managed by Ralf Rangnick, will compete in a group alongside defending champions Argentina, Algeria and Jordan at this summer’s tournament. The European side secured qualification for the World Cup finals for the first time since 1998.

Chukwuemeka, who previously played for Chelsea and Aston Villa, was born in Austria but relocated to England during childhood. He represented England at various youth levels but never earned a senior cap for the Three Lions.
FIFA confirmed the 22-year-old’s change of international allegiance late on Monday, meaning he could make his debut for Austria in the March friendly matches against Ghana and South Korea.
The midfielder progressed through Aston Villa’s academy before completing a move to Chelsea in 2022. He later joined Borussia Dortmund on loan in early 2025, and the Bundesliga club made the transfer permanent during the summer.
Chukwuemeka has made 20 league appearances for Dortmund this season, scoring twice.
On the same day, 20-year-old Paul Wanner, a former Bayern Munich midfielder now playing for PSV Eindhoven, also switched his international allegiance from Germany to Austria.
