Hamas has urged Iran to stop its attacks on Gulf states, marking a rare public appeal to its main ally

In a statement, the Tehran-backed group called on its “brothers in Iran to avoid targeting neighbouring countries,” emphasizing that all regional nations should work together “to preserve the bonds of brotherhood.”

At the same time, Hamas reaffirmed Iran’s right to defend itself against ongoing US and Israeli strikes.

While Iranian authorities insist their retaliatory attacks target “American installations” in the Gulf rather than neighbouring countries, many strikes have hit civilian infrastructure.

Hamas said on Saturday it was “following with deep concern the ongoing war in the region” and called on “all states and international organisations to work towards halting [the war] immediately.” Iran has not responded publicly to the statement.

Over the past two weeks, Iranian drone and missile strikes have affected several Gulf nations, leaving at least 18 people dead, mostly security personnel and foreign workers. Six fatalities were reported each in the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait, while Oman, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain each recorded two deaths.

Iran is Hamas’s largest backer, providing funding, weapons, and political support. The Palestinian group previously condemned the assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei by joint US-Israeli strikes on February 28 as a “heinous crime.”

Hamas, part of Iran’s “axis of resistance” coalition against US and Israeli influence, also receives significant backing from Turkey and Qatar. The group fought a prolonged conflict with Israel in Gaza, which ended with a US-brokered ceasefire last October. Since then, both sides have accused each other of near-daily ceasefire violations.

According to the Hamas-run health ministry, 649 people have died in Gaza since the ceasefire took effect.
