Tension flared in South Africa’s Eastern Cape as protests against the installation of a Nigerian traditional leader turned v!olent, with demonstrators setting vehicles ablaze and attacking properties linked to foreign nationals
The unrest erupted in East London, where groups gathered to oppose the coronation of Solomon Ogbonna Ezike as leader of the Igbo community in the area.

What began as a protest quickly escalated, with several vehicles—including vans and trucks—set on fire while buildings believed to belong to foreigners were also targeted.
Security operatives were deployed to restore calm, with police using crowd-control tactics such as stun grenades to disperse the agitated crowd.
Ezike’s installation as “Igwe Ndigbo,” a title traditionally used by Igbo communities to designate a cultural leader, brought about the protest and destructions.
They argued that recognising a foreign monarch within the country challenges local traditional authority systems and raises concerns about national sovereignty.
