Real Sociedad were crowned Copa del Rey champions after defeating Atletico Madrid 4-3 on penalties following a gripping 2-2 draw, with goalkeeper Unai Marrero delivering the decisive performance
The match at La Cartuja Stadium exploded into life almost instantly, as Ander Barrenetxea headed Sociedad in front just seconds after kickoff from a cross by Goncalo Guedes.
Atletico Madrid quickly regrouped and equalised in the 18th minute, with Antoine Griezmann setting up Ademola Lookman to finish calmly.
Sociedad restored their lead just before halftime when Mikel Oyarzabal converted from the penalty spot after Juan Musso fouled Guedes in the box.
Atletico continued to push and eventually found another equaliser late in the game, as Julian Alvarez rifled a powerful strike into the top corner in the 83rd minute. Despite late opportunities for Atletico, including close-range misses from Alex Baena and Johnny Cardoso, the match went into extra time.
Both sides came close to finding a winner in the additional period. Musso produced an impressive double save to deny Carlos Soler and Orri Oksarsson, while Alvarez struck the crossbar from distance at the other end.
With nothing separating the teams, the final was settled by penalties. Marrero made crucial saves to stop Alexander Sorloth and Alvarez, giving Sociedad the edge. Although Oksarsson missed his attempt, successful efforts from Soler, Luka Susic and Aihen Munoz kept Sociedad in control before Pablo Marin fired home the winning penalty to seal the triumph.
