The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has alleged that about 60 per cent of Nigerian university students are involved in internet fraud

He made the claim on Tuesday at the 8th biennial conference of the Committee of Pro-Chancellors of State-Owned Universities in Nigeria, held in Kano State, during a session themed “Unlocking the Potentials of Artificial Intelligence: University Governance, Internationalisation and Rankings.”

Olukoyede said findings from his recent research indicate a widespread involvement of undergraduates in cybercrime, popularly known as “Yahoo-Yahoo,” describing the trend as deeply alarming.

“My research in the last year has shown that about six out of 10 students in our universities are into cybercrime. It is a very disturbing situation,” he said.

He added that many of the suspects recently arrested by the commission were university students, noting that some of them had even extended their activities into academic spaces by compromising lecturers.

According to him, the development reflects broader institutional weaknesses, including poor oversight and administrative lapses within tertiary institutions.
