Public commentator Daniel Regha has sparked fresh debate online after openly questioning a recent declaration attributed to Bishop David Oyedepo regarding divine intervention against banditry in Nigeria.
Regha’s remarks come in the wake of ongoing violent incidents across several parts of the country, despite claims that a “divine judgment” had been pronounced to take effect within seven days.
According to the widely circulated claim, Oyedepo allegedly declared that bandits would face divine judgment within a week, a statement reported around April 19, 2026. However, following the expiration of the seven-day period, multiple violent attacks have continued to be reported in different regions.
Among the incidents referenced in recent reports are attacks and abductions across northern and central Nigeria, including violence in Kogi, Katsina, Benue, Ondo, and Plateau States, as well as an overnight attack attributed to militants linked to the Islamic State group in northeastern Nigeria.
Against this backdrop, Regha questioned the effectiveness of the proclamation in a strongly worded post, stating:
“Oyedepo declared divine judgment on bandits within seven days, 7 DAYS. This was reported on the 19th of April 2026. Now 7 days has ended, but it’s been one news about bandits attacking after the other.

This are just a few headlines in the last 24-48hrs. So what happened to his declaration, and divine retribution? It didn’t work.”
The post has since generated renewed discussion online about faith-based pronouncements, public expectations, and the worsening security situation in parts of the country.
As of the time of reporting, there has been no official response from Oyedepo or his representatives regarding Regha’s comments or the referenced declaration.
