YouTube says it will soon begin automatically flagging AI-generated content on its platform, marking a major shift from its previous reliance on creators to disclose the use of artificial intelligence tools themselves

The Google-owned video platform announced the update in a blog post on Wednesday, explaining that its systems will now identify significant use of photorealistic AI in videos and apply warning labels for viewers automatically.

“If a creator doesn’t specify whether or not they used AI, but our systems detect significant photorealistic AI use, we will now automatically apply a label,” YouTube said.

The new policy replaces the company’s 2024 approach, which depended largely on creators voluntarily flagging AI-generated material in their uploads.

The move comes as generative AI technology continues to advance rapidly, making it harder for users to distinguish between real and AI-created visuals, audio and videos. Popular tools now include Google’s Veo 3.1 and Seedance, developed by TikTok parent company ByteDance.

YouTube said creators who believe their videos were wrongly labelled will have the option to appeal the decision. The company also clarified that the AI labels will not affect how videos are recommended through its algorithm.

Other digital platforms, including music streaming service Spotify, have also started introducing automatic AI-content detection measures as online spaces become increasingly filled with synthetic media.
