Governor Seyi Makinde has asked federal government to stop the “deceit’ with the creation of State Police amid growing outrage over the kidnapping of schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State
Speaking during a public address, Makinde described the current security situation as a painful and difficult moment for both himself and the state, stressing that security has always been one of the major pillars of his administration.

The governor defended the creation of the Amotekun security outfit, noting that Oyo State had no such local security structure before his administration came into office. He explained that Amotekun was created as an alternative after the federal government failed to approve state policing.
“This is a very tough period for me as a person and also for our state. But people will know, face security was one of the major pillars of this administration,” he said.
“Before this government, nothing like Amotekun in Oyo. We wanted state police. It was because we didn’t get state police that’s why Amotekun came as stopgap They should stop wasting Nigerian time.”, he added.
Makinde stated that the South-West governors and lawmakers worked together to establish Amotekun through a regional legal framework, adding that Lagos remained the only South-West state without the outfit because “their oga don’t want Amotekun.”
He further urged the federal government to stop delaying the implementation of state police, insisting that state assemblies should be empowered to create and control their own policing systems rather than leaving such authority in the hands of the Inspector General of Police.
“But at this point, we won’t want to be deceived anymore… If they want to do State Police, they should allow our assembly to create it, not the Inspector General of Police. Our state assembly will create it. Give them the authority, the support. They are here. Within the shortest possible time, state police will come to be,” Makinde declared.
