Ooni's palace denies giving Baba Ijesha chieftaincy title

Days after Baba Ijesha announced that the Ooni of Ife honoured him with a chieftaincy title, the monarch’s palace has said it cannot confirm that such an honour was given

The actor, whose real name is James Olanrewaju Omiyinka, recently visited the Ooni alongside his wife, Luminee. After the visit, he shared that the monarch had not only gifted him a brand-new car but had also bestowed on him the title “Baba Awada Konge Oduwa, Ile Ife, Ile Oodua.”

But according to the palace, only one part of that announcement is certain.

The Ooni’s spokesperson, Moses Olafere, told ‘Punch’ that he knew Baba Ijesha received a car from the monarch, but he could not say the same about the alleged chieftaincy title.

Olafere explained that giving out cars is something the Ooni has done for years and is not reserved for a select group of people.

“Kabiyesi gives cars to people. This is not the first time. He has given cars to many people, including kings and other individuals, and this is not new.”

He went on to say the monarch has extended the same generosity to several people over the years, including himself.

“Many people have benefited from Kabiyesi’s car gifts, including me and popular figures like Haruna Ishola and Sefiu Alao. He gives out cars almost every day.”

While Baba Ijesha has maintained that he was also honoured with a traditional title, the palace says it has no information to support that claim, even though it acknowledges that the actor did receive a new vehicle from the Ooni.
