Lere Olayinka, the media aide to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has spoken against the practice of sending children below the age of 15 to work as househelps.
According to him, parents who allow their children at that age to work as domestic helpers in other people’s homes should face prosecution.
“If you have a child of less than 15 years in your house as HOUSE HELP, you should be arrested and prosecuted. If you allow your less than 15-year-old child to be doing HOUSE HELP in someone’s house, you should be arrested and prosecuted too. Only wicked and heartless parents will send a 10 year-old child to another person’s house as House Help,” Olayinka said.
He said children at such a young age should not be sent away from their homes to work as househelps, adding that parents have a responsibility to protect their children and ensure they are given the chance to grow and develop properly.
Olayinka’s comment comes amid continued concerns about the welfare of children who are taken to other homes for domestic work at very young ages with some facing cases of maltreatment and ab.use.
