Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin has resigned from office, saying worsening health has made it impossible for him to continue carrying out his constitutional duties
The 76-year-old confirmed his decision in a telephone interview after reports emerged that he planned to step down before the end of his tenure in 2028.
In a resignation letter sent to the Speaker of Parliament, Shahabuddin said his physical and mental health had deteriorated significantly, leaving him unable to effectively perform the responsibilities of the presidency.
Known popularly as “Chuppu,” Shahabuddin was elected president in 2023 with the backing of the Awami League, led by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Following the student-led uprising that forced Hasina from power in 2024, Shahabuddin came under increasing pressure to resign due to his close ties to her administration.
Earlier this year, he denied claims that he had communicated with Hasina while receiving medical treatment in London.
Just a day before his resignation was confirmed, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed had said the government had not received any official resignation letter from the president.
