Bob Manuel has cleared up the misunderstanding surrounding his earlier comments about Nollywood, saying he never claimed to be older than the industry.
The veteran actor explained that his words were taken out of context after an appearance on a podcast. According to him, what he actually said was that he had already been acting before Pete Edochie joined what later became known as Nollywood.
He stressed that some bloggers misrepresented his statement and made it seem like he was comparing his age to the industry itself.
During an interview, he said:
“I cannot say I’m older than Nollywood. I think some bloggers put words in my mouth because in a podcast, I said I was in Nollywood before Pete Edochie. In other words, Nollywood wasn’t there when Pete Edochie, Sam Loco and others started acting. Nollywood came with the release of Living in Bondage.”
Bob Manuel said his point was simply about the history of Nigerian filmmaking. He noted that many actors, including Pete Edochie and the late Sam Loco, were already performing long before the name “Nollywood” became widely recognised, adding that the industry as it is known today took shape with the release of Living in Bondage.
