There are moments in life when arguing isn’t necessary because experience has already said everything that needs to be said.
Mary Njoku recently shared one of those moments on his page.
She recalled a conversation she had several years ago with a man she had hired for a project. As they talked, he opened up about the pressure he was living with. He spoke about the responsibility of making money, building a business, and carrying the expectations of people who depended on him.
Wanting to relate, she told him, “I understand.”
But he quickly disagreed.
He said, “No, you don’t. You can’t possibly understand. You are a woman. Women don’t understand that kind of pressure.”
Instead of trying to convince him otherwise, she simply smiled.
She replied, “Of course, how can I?”
Then she signed his cheque, handed it to him, and wished him well.
Looking back on that moment, she explained why she never felt the need to argue.
“Didn’t argue.
Reality doesn’t need defending. Sometimes, your life speaks louder than your words.”
She went on to reflect on something she believes many people fail to notice.
For generations, she said, many African women have quietly carried enormous responsibilities long before they ever became wives or mothers. They have helped raise younger siblings, paid school fees, supported ageing parents, cared for extended family members, and continued doing the same even after building families of their own.
According to her, much of that effort goes unnoticed.
The sacrifices are often taken for granted, and in some cases, the success of women is credited to the nearest man instead. Others are simply expected to keep giving without anyone stopping to acknowledge how much they are carrying.
She believes society has traditionally praised men for being providers, while many women’s contributions have been treated as ordinary expectations rather than achievements deserving recognition.
She ended her message with words of appreciation for women who continue to show up every day despite the weight they carry.
“To every woman out there who is providing, building, leading, nurturing, sacrificing, succeeding at work, and still holding her home together.
Take your flowers. 🌸”, she said.
