Omoyele Sowore has criticised the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) over its continued destruction of cannabis farms, arguing that the practice wastes potentially valuable agricultural and economic resources.
Sowore said authorities should reconsider the approach and look at how cannabis could be legally regulated and developed for legitimate medicinal and industrial purposes.
In a statement, he said:
“It is idiotic NDLEA to wake up, put on uniforms, march into farms, and set economically viable crops worth millions of dollars ablaze while your country is drowning in multidimensional poverty.Stop destroying cannabis farms. Stop wasting enormous economic opportunities in the name of a failed and outdated policy.
“Legalize and properly regulate cannabis. Invest in research, harness its legitimate medicinal and industrial potential, create jobs, generate revenue, and build an industry Nigerians can benefit from.You cannot burn your way out of poverty, foolish people!”
Sowore’s position is that destroying cannabis farms should not be the only response to the cultivation of the plant.
He wants the government to consider regulation, research and legitimate commercial uses as a way of turning the crop into an economic opportunity rather than simply eliminating it.
