Bovi recalled the period when many of Nigeria’s comedians were coming up together and regularly performing on the same shows.
He explained that comedians such as Seyi Law, I Go Die, I Go Save, Okey Bakassi and others spent a lot of time together through shows like Night of a Thousand Laughs and the Glo Comedy Tour.
During an interview, Bovi said:
“All the comedians used to be on ‘Night of a thousand laughs’ or ‘Glo comedy tour’ round the nation. We used to spend time together, you will see Seyi Law, I go die, I go save, Okey Bakassi, we were one big family, until basket mouth did ‘Basket mouth uncensored’ so we started discovering our individual strengths”.
Bovi said Basketmouth’s Uncensored helped change the way comedians looked at their careers. Rather than everyone continuing to work mainly as part of the same comedy circuit, comedians began to see the value in building their own identity, style and audience.
Basketmouth had shown that a comedian could put his own name on a major show and make the show itself part of his brand. That gave others room to think about what they could do individually.
