Actor Gideon Okeke says he does not take on film projects with budgets below ₦100 million, and according to him, the productions he is known for usually cost much more.
The actor made the point while talking about the kind of films he chooses to work on and the difference between cinema productions, streaming projects and lower-budget films made for platforms such as YouTube.
For Okeke, the size of a production matters when deciding whether to take part in a project. He says he has set a minimum figure for the films he works on, and that figure starts at ₦100 million.
Speaking on a podcast, he said:
“I never do any film where the budget na less than 100 million. Have you taken your 100 million Naira budget to go and do YouTube film? Maybe I’ll follow you. No, no be pay well. Nothing where I do where the budget na less than 100 million.
“All the film where you know me for, na from 300 million upwards. That’s why you see me for cinema, that’s why you see me for Netflix, yeah,” Gideon Okeke said.
He means, he is looking for productions that have the kind of financial backing that allows for a bigger and more polished project.
The actor also drew a line between the films he is associated with and lower-budget productions. While YouTube has become an important outlet for filmmakers, particularly for productions working with smaller budgets, Okeke made it clear that this is not where he currently sees himself.
He even joked about the possibility of following someone who takes a ₦100 million budget to make a YouTube film, before returning to his main point about the level of pay and production budgets he expects.
“No, no be pay well,” he added.
