Singer Adekunle Gold has spoken about the decision he and his wife, Simi, made to check their genotypes before getting married.
The singer, who lives with sickle cell, said knowing their genotypes was important to him because he did not want to have a child who might have to deal with the same condition.
Speaking during an episode of the Brut Podcast, Adekunle Gold said he would not have gone ahead with the marriage if Simi had a genotype that could put their children at risk.
He said:
“I wouldn’t have married my wife Simi if she were SS or AS. She’s AA. I don’t think it makes sense to bring a child into this world and make them go through all that. We did a genotype test before we got married.”
For him, the test was simply part of making a careful decision before starting a family.
He explained that his own experience with sickle cell has shaped the way he thinks about having children and the possibility of passing the condition on.
