A man, Manaseh Bitrus Jatau, has been arrested by the Kaduna State Police Command over the de.ath of his girlfriend, 35-year-old Rebecca Ojonike Jeremiah.
The incident came to light on September 5 after Rebecca’s lifeless body was found along Mai Angwa Street in the Romi area of Kaduna. Cotton wool was reportedly found stuffed in her nose.
Police detectives from the Romi Outstation were called to the scene and took her to St. Gerald Hospital in Kakuri, where a doctor confirmed that she had d!ed. Her body was later deposited at the hospital mortuary for an autopsy.
According to the police, initial findings showed that Jatau was the last person known to have contacted Rebecca before asking her to meet him at Ebano Joint in Romi.
Investigators later tracked him down to his workplace at Tomato Jos Company in the Maraban Jos area, where he was arrested.
During questioning, police said Jatau admitted that he had a fight with Rebecca in his room after an argument over a phone call from another woman. He allegedly told investigators that the fight ended in her de.ath.
The suspect also reportedly confessed to moving Rebecca’s body to an open field near his house in an attempt to hide what had happened.
Confirming the arrest, Kaduna State Police Command spokesperson DSP Mansir Hassan said the suspect remains in police custody while investigators work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the death.
“The suspect is currently in Police custody, and the case is being investigated and will be charged to court upon conclusion of investigation”, he said.
