Former England international striker Jamie Vardy has put Lionel Messi in a category of his own after comparing the Argentine with Cristiano Ronaldo, another player he faced during his career.
Vardy had the chance to play against both football icons, giving him a first-hand view of how they operated on the pitch. While Ronaldo was also a major challenge, Vardy recalled Messi as someone who seemed to have a completely different relationship with the ball.
Rather than simply focusing on Messi’s ability to score or create chances, Vardy remembered how difficult it was to take the ball away from him once he had it at his feet. Even as an opponent, he found himself watching what Messi was doing.
In an interview, he said:
“I’ve played against Cristiano Ronaldo, but Messi is different. I was on the pitch just looking at him. The ball was like a magnet to his feet, and there was nothing we could do to stop him. I just told him, ‘Well done.”
Having faced both Ronaldo and Messi, Vardy remembers Messi as the player who was hardest to contain.
