Content creator and influencer Mariam Oyakhilome has explained why she usually avoids employing people she already knows, saying it can make it difficult to hold them accountable.
According to her, a family friend once approached her for a job, but she initially turned her down because of their existing relationship. She later changed her mind after speaking with her father, who encouraged her to give the woman a means of supporting herself.
She said she eventually employed her on a ₦150,000 salary and also provided food, while her actual monthly payment had risen to ₦250,000.
The situation, however, became more complicated when the woman’s mother began asking her to also take care of the family’s financial needs, including school fees.
In a post she shared, Mariam said:
“This is why I don’t like employing people I know. One of my family friends reached out and said she wanted to do the job. I said no, I cannot employ you because I know you.
“I want somebody I don’t know, so that I can hold them accountable. I spoke to my dad, and he told me to employ her so she could support herself. So, I put her on a ₦150,000 salary.
“I give her food, then I still pay her ₦250K. Now the mother is calling me to support them and pay her school fees. If na una, una go pay that kind thing? No be see finish be that one?”.
