Rapper Olamide has recalled the period he decided to leave school and move to Lagos to pursue music.
The rapper was already in the 200-300 level when he became increasingly frustrated with school and began to feel that he could not give his studies the attention they required while pursuing his music career.
According to Olamide, hearing Wande Coal’s “Bumper 2 Bumper” for the first time also played a part in his decision. He realised that staying in school would make it difficult to fully concentrate on music.
Speaking in an interview, he said:
“I dropped out of school in 200-300 level. i was fed up. Also, I heard Wande Coal’s ‘Bumper 2 Bumper’ for the first time. i knew i wouldn’t be able to full concentrate while still in school. called Cabasa, & packed my bags for lagos”.
With the decision made, Olamide contacted producer ID Cabasa and packed his bags for Lagos, where he could focus on building his music career.
That decision eventually became an important part of the journey that led to his emergence as one of Nigeria’s prominent indigenous rappers.
