The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja on Thursday upheld the election victory of Senator Monday Okpebholo as Governor of Edo State following the September 21, 2024 governorship election

A three-member panel, led by Justice Mohamed Danjuma, dismissed the appeal filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Asue Ighodalo, who challenged the election results citing alleged irregularities such as over-voting and non-compliance with the Electoral Act. However, the court found these claims to be unsubstantiated.
Governor Okpebholo was declared the winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), securing 291,667 votes against Ighodalo’s 247,274 votes.
The PDP’s petition had earlier been dismissed by the Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal for lack of merit.
While the Court of Appeal’s ruling affirms Okpebholo’s mandate, the decision can still be appealed at the Supreme Court, Nigeria’s highest judicial authority on election matters.
