Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni has denied accusations of racism following a heated clash with Vinícius Junior during Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League play-off match against Real Madrid

The confrontation occurred in the 51st minute at Estádio da Luz, shortly after Vinícius had put Madrid ahead 1-0. The Brazilian informed referee François Letexier that Prestianni had allegedly directed a racial slur at him while covering his mouth with his shirt.

The claim triggered FIFA’s anti-racism protocol, causing an 11-minute halt as officials and team captains met on the pitch to discuss the incident.

In a statement on social media Wednesday morning, Prestianni said his words had been misinterpreted. The Argentine insisted he has never behaved in a racist manner and expressed regret that Vinícius may have misunderstood him in the heat of the moment. He also alleged he received threats from Real Madrid players in the tunnel after the game.

“I want to clarify that at no time did I direct racist insults to Vini Jr, who regrettably misunderstood what he thought he heard. I was never racist with anyone and I regret the threats I received from Real Madrid players,” Prestianni wrote.

The allegations gained support from Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé, who said he heard the remarks and called for strict punishment if verified. Vinícius also commented online, condemning racism and those responsible.

Benfica coach José Mourinho defended his player, suggesting the incident could have been the result of provocation or a language misunderstanding rather than discrimination.

Referee Letexier’s match report is expected to trigger a formal investigation by UEFA’s Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body. If found guilty under UEFA regulations, Prestianni could face a suspension of at least 10 matches.
