Senate President Godswill Akpabio has paid glowing tribute to former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a disciplined and incorruptible leader whose legacy is defined by integrity and patriotism

Speaking at an expanded Federal Executive Council (FEC) session held in Buhari’s honour at the State House in Abuja on Thursday, Akpabio praised the former president for his unwavering devotion to nation-building and his refusal to enrich himself at the expense of Nigerians.
“President Buhari believed that discipline mattered. That integrity mattered. That leadership, even when lonely, must be anchored in something greater than power,” Akpabio said.
He noted that Buhari never chased popularity but remained committed to doing what was right, even if it meant standing alone.
“He did not seek to ride waves of popular acclaim; he walked, with steadiness and often in solitude, along the ridge of national conscience,” Akpabio added. “Let us be honest, he was tough. He was a soldier who did not flinch under fire, a leader who did not flee from responsibility, and above all, a Nigerian whose loyalty to this nation was never up for sale.”
According to Akpabio, Buhari’s toughness was not driven by ego but by a deep sense of duty to the country.
“His toughness was born not of pride, but of patriotism—a fierce, unrelenting belief that Nigeria, with all its challenges, was still worth fighting for,” he said.
Recalling Buhari’s journey from military ruler to democratic leader, Akpabio said the former president remained consistent in his love for the nation.
