Serious tension has erupted in Enugu, the Coal City capital, after the shooting to de.ath of popular Ogene musician, Igbo Jah by a police officer from the Anti-Cult Unit of the Enugu State Police Command

According to reports, angry youths have taken to the streets, setting bonfires in the Obiagu and Asata areas as a form of protest over the incident.

It is reported that Igbo Jah was shot by an Anti-Cult Police operative on Friday night after attending an event at the anti-cult office.

Eyewitnesses stated that the musician was leaving the office when the officer discharged his firearm, hitting him.

He was quickly rushed to a nearby hospital but was pronounced de.ad on arrival.

The Enugu State Police Command confirmed the incident through a statement released by spokesman DSP Daniel Ndukwe.

The statement reads;

“A male police inspector serving in the Anti-Cultism Tactical Squad has been arrested and detained for the alleged murder of Okezie Chikezie Mba, known as Igbo Jah.”

“The incident occurred around 8:10 p.m. on October 25, 2024, at the Tactical Squad’s Headquarters.”

“The musician was reportedly leaving after a friendly visit when, for reasons yet to be clarified, the police officer fired his rifle, striking the victim.”

“He was rushed to a hospital, where he was confirmed de.ad. His body has been placed in the mortuary for preservation and autopsy.”

Ndukwe further stated that Commissioner of Police Kanayo Uzuegbu has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State CID to conduct a comprehensive investigation. This investigation aims to ensure prompt and appropriate disciplinary actions against the involved officer.

The Commissioner expressed condolences to the victim’s family, friends, and associates, labeling the incident as unacceptable. He assured that the officer and any others found responsible would face legal consequences as a deterrent.

CP Kanayo urged everyone connected to the victim to remain calm and cooperate with the police to ensure justice is served.
