Superstar, D’banj has revealed that he and Don Jazzy intentionally created a false narrative about their roles during the early days of Mo’Hits Records to build mystique and authority around the brand

In a recent interview, D’banj explained that although they were equal partners, they decided to portray Don Jazzy as the boss and himself as the signed artist in order to control perception and boost their credibility in the industry.

“At the time, Mo’Hits wasn’t getting the recognition it deserved. We realized we were both label heads, artists, and producers — a combination that made us unique. But we needed to create an aura that commanded respect,” D’banj said.

He explained that Don Jazzy intentionally took on a quiet, enigmatic persona, while he, D’banj, played the charismatic frontman. The illusion was so detailed that even their onstage interactions were rehearsed to fit the brand.

“Whenever I leaned in to whisper to Jazzy on stage, we weren’t actually saying anything. It was all showmanship — part of the branding,” he said. “We had that level of trust. Jazzy didn’t need to speak — his silence spoke volumes.”

He recounted a pivotal moment at their first major show, which was attended by high-profile guests including Lagos dignitaries and politicians. D’banj publicly prostrated before Don Jazzy on stage, sealing the image in the public’s mind.

“That moment changed everything. From then on, everyone assumed he signed me. They didn’t know it was a 50-50 arrangement,” he said.

D’banj described the strategy as a carefully crafted narrative they stuck to — one that ultimately fueled the Mo’Hits empire and elevated their image in the Nigerian music scene.
