Fresh violence erupts in Jos after curfew relaxation

Tension gripped Jos on Wednesday despite the Plateau State Government’s decision to ease the previously imposed 48-hour curfew

The restriction had been introduced after a deadly assault on residents of Angwan Rukuba, where no fewer than 28 people were killed by gunmen.

Following what authorities described as an improvement in security, the government reviewed the curfew affecting Jos North Local Government Area.

According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the Commissioner for Information, Joyce Ramnap, residents were permitted to move freely between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. starting from April 1 to enable them carry out essential daily activities.

However, the situation remained volatile as violence resurfaced hours after the adjustment took effect.

Reports indicate that suspected hoodlums and angry youths launched attacks on motorists and pedestrians across several parts of Jos, sparking renewed fear across the city.

Along the road leading to the University of Jos Permanent Site, a young man was reportedly killed after being brutally attacked by assailants.

In other locations, including Terminus, Bauchi Road, and Gangare, several vehicles were vandalised, with windscreens smashed during the unrest.

Areas such as the University of Jos axis, Bauchi Road, Farin Gada, Tina Junction, and Chobe were said to be among the worst affected, as the fresh wave of violence brought commercial activities in the state capital to a standstill.
