Adamawa Governor Ahmadu Fintiri has distanced himself from the recent expulsion of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and his allies from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), warning that the decision could deepen divisions within the party.

In a statement, Fintiri said, “I wish to categorically state that I dissociate myself from the position of expelling the honourable minister of the Federal Capital Territory, @GovWike, from @OfficialPDPNig. I believe that this decision is not in the best interest of the party, and I will not be party to any attempt that could further plunge the PDP into unending crisis.”

The PDP had suspended Wike, former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose, former national secretary Samuel Anyanwu, and eight others during its convention in Ibadan on Saturday. The motion for the expulsions was moved by former PDP National Vice Chairman (South) Olabode George, seconded by Bauchi State PDP Chairman Samaila Burga, and reportedly supported by convention members.

The party cited breaches of its constitution, including holding parallel congresses, canvassing for other parties, and sponsoring litigations against the PDP, as reasons for the expulsions.

However, Fintiri criticized the move, suggesting it could threaten party unity. He urged all stakeholders to focus on reconciliation and cohesion. “I stand for the peace and stability of the PDP, and I will not support anything that could lead to its disintegration. I believe that peace and reconciliation are the only ways forward for our great party,” he said.

The convention also saw the expulsion of Mao Ohabunwa, chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Wike-led faction; former national organising secretary Umar Bature; Adeyemi Ajibade; Mohammed Abdulrahman; Austin Nwachukwu; Abraham Amah; George Turner; and Dan Orbih.
