Saidat Adeshina, mother of Nigerian singer Destiny Boy, has opened up about her son’s battle with a serious medical condition that ultimately led to his death

In a recent interview, Saidat revealed that the Fuji artist, whose real name was Afeez Adeshina, began experiencing health challenges two years ago during preparations for the naming ceremony of his first child.

“He started having seizures then,” she recounted.

The family pursued every possible treatment, combining both medical and traditional approaches. Destiny Boy was referred to an Ifa priest, Edun Ifayomi, whom he considered a father figure. According to Saidat, the priest, who had also contributed to the child’s naming ceremony, supported the family financially and emotionally, even helping with hospital bills.

“This happened about two years ago. The Ifa priest was not even aware of the incident initially. We informed him that Destiny Boy was sick. He said nothing must happen to him,” she said.

Saidat explained that Ifayomi gave her a soap to bathe her son, which appeared to improve his condition temporarily. The illness, called ‘Oku or,’ caused Destiny Boy to become stiff like someone with epilepsy during attacks, followed by unusual behavior resembling a mental disorder. The family kept his struggles private to protect his career.

“We did not let the public know about this because he was a superstar. We took him to churches, herbalists, everything for a cure, all to no avail,” she said. “Destiny felt comfortable visiting Ọba Edun because he was always free with him.”

The tragic final episode occurred just two weeks ago. After a trip to Ayetoro, Destiny Boy was taken to Ifayomi’s home for treatment. Saidat described the sequence of events leading to his death:

“Two weeks ago, when he went to Ayetoro and was returning, they took him to Ifayomi’s house. I was on the phone with him and he seemed fine. Five days ago, he didn’t pick my call. Three days ago, I sent greetings through his sister. Two days ago, they called me urgently because a seizure had started. By the time I arrived at the hospital, he had passed away. My son did not do any money ritual.”
