James Tolkan, a veteran American actor widely recognized for his role in the Back to the Future trilogy, has passed away.

According to Bob Gale who co-created the iconic franchise alongside director Robert Zemeckis told TMZ that, Tolkan died peacefully on Friday at his home in Lake Placid. The exact cause of his death has not been disclosed.

Throughout his career, Tolkan built a reputation as a tough, authoritative screen presence, appearing in several notable 1980s films including Top Gun and WarGames.

However, he became most memorable for his portrayal of Vice Principal Strickland in the Back to the Future series, where he frequently scolded Marty McFly, calling him a “slacker.”

His agent, John Alcantar, shared with TMZ that James had a deep appreciation for the Back to the Future fan community and genuinely enjoyed attending conventions.

Despite often playing stern or intimidating characters, Tolkan was described as warm and kind-hearted in real life “a total sweetheart of a man.”
James Tolkan survived by his wife, Parmelee.
