Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum has announced that she will press charges against a man who groped her during a public event near the National Palace in Mexico City, according to the BBC
Footage captured on a mobile phone shows Sheinbaum addressing supporters on Tuesday when a man approached from behind, kissed her on the neck, and groped her. She quickly stepped away as a member of her team intervened. Authorities have since arrested the suspect.
At a news conference, Sheinbaum explained that she filed charges to protect women across Mexico.
“If they do this to the president, what will happen to all women in our country?” she said, noting that the suspect had allegedly harassed other women in the crowd.
Women’s rights groups in Mexico condemned the incident, describing it as a stark reminder of entrenched misogyny in the country, where some men feel entitled to harass women publicly. Mexico faces a serious gender-based violence crisis, with estimates suggesting that 98% of femicides go unpunished.
Despite the attack, Sheinbaum emphasized that she would continue engaging with citizens in public spaces while stressing the need to set a firm boundary against harassment.
The incident comes shortly after the murder of Carlos Manzo, mayor of Uruapan in Michoacán, underlining ongoing security challenges for public officials in Mexico.
Since taking office, Sheinbaum has focused on improving national security, including cracking down on fentanyl trafficking, while maintaining close, hands-on engagement with the public.
