A money lender, Richard Dawson, terrorized his victims, leaving a trail of fear and despair in Barnsley, South Yorkshire. CCTV footage captures the harrowing moment as Dawson, described as vile, coerced a man into the boot of his car before robbing him at an ATM.
Dawson, 35, operated like a predator, treating debtors as mere cash machines. His schemes trapped 29 victims in a cycle of debt, amassing over £52,000. One victim, a desperate mother, initially borrowed £5 but was ensnared in escalating demands, forced to repay double or triple each week.
The terror didn’t stop there. Victims faced physical assaults, with one suffering a broken jaw, leaving permanent disfigurement. Dawson’s reign of terror ended when authorities, alerted by the England Illegal Money Lending Team, raided his home, seizing incriminating evidence.
Sentenced to seven years, Dawson’s conviction sends a strong message: illegal money lending and violence will not be tolerated. Victims, though scarred, showed remarkable courage in seeking justice. Such heinous crimes must be met with swift and severe consequences.
