Ever heard someone say their electricity has never been better and watch the internet explode?
That’s exactly what happened when Nigerian comedian Freedom Okpetoritse Atsepoyi, popularly known as Mr Jollof, shared his personal experience with power supply under Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
In a recent Instagram video, Mr Jollof revealed that, in his area, electricity has been consistent since the current president took office. He told his followers:
“I have the right to share my personal experience, just as everyone else has the right to express their own views.”
He went on to highlight a huge improvement in his locality, claiming:
“I want to show how we have been able to enjoy a stable electricity supply since President Bola Ahmed Tinubu came into power. The situation now is much better than it was before. I don’t even need an inverter anymore.”
The comedian also pointed out that the current government allows states to generate and distribute electricity independently.
His advice for Nigerians still struggling with erratic power?
“Go ask your governor or your commissioner of power and energy why you’re not getting electricity.”
But, as you might expect, his statement didn’t sit well with everyone. Many social media users criticized him for defending the government at a time when frequent outages continue to affect countless Nigerians.
The timing of the clip also didn’t help, especially after recent community protests over unreliable electricity.
It seems Mr Jollof just lit up a whole new conversation about electricity in Nigeria to trigger people’s reactions of which many citizens are not happy with due to their contrary experiences.
