A Nigerian soldier, Lance Corporal Rotimi Olamilekan, is drawing attention after being suspended for posting a video online where he called on politicians to encourage their own children to join the military.

In the video, he opened up about the realities of life as a soldier, especially the financial strain many face. According to him, his salary was increased earlier this year, but even that hasn’t made things much easier.

“As a Soldier, My Last Salary Was ₦109,000. It Was ₦51,000 Before; They Only Increased It To ₦109,000 Last February,” he said.
He went on to explain that soldiers often have to pay out of pocket for essential gear items many would assume are provided by the military.

“Our Uniform Alone Costs ₦55,000, Boots ₦60,000 And We Pay For Them Ourselves. Same Goes For The Helmet And Bulletproof Vest,” he added.

Olamilekan also shared details about his service, revealing that he spent nearly five years deployed in Maiduguri, Borno State one of the regions most affected by insurgency.

“I Spent 4 Years And 9 Months In Maiduguri, Borno State.”
