The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast widespread rainfall and thunderstorms across much of the country from Monday to Wednesday, cautioning residents in northern and central states about the risk of flash floods

In a weather outlook released on Sunday in Abuja, NiMet predicted that thunderstorms and moderate rainfall would affect parts of Jigawa, Zamfara, Kano, Kaduna, Bauchi, Yobe, and Katsina on Monday morning, while Kebbi, Adamawa, and Taraba would experience rains later in the day.

“Flash floods are possible in Bauchi, Jigawa, Katsina, Kaduna, and Kano States during this period,” the agency warned.

The forecast also showed that central states such as Niger, Benue, the Federal Capital Territory, Plateau, and Nasarawa would experience cloudy conditions and light to moderate rains, with a high risk of flooding particularly in parts of Plateau State.

In the South, NiMet projected light to moderate rainfall across Ondo, Imo, Abia, Enugu, Ebonyi, Anambra, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom.

For Tuesday, the agency said northern states would see sunny skies with patches of clouds, while thunderstorms and rains would persist in Adamawa, Taraba, and surrounding areas. “Central and southern regions will continue to experience moderate rainfall,” NiMet added.

By Wednesday, northern states are expected to witness a mix of sunshine and thunderstorms, while central areas will remain cloudy with moderate rain. In the South, Ebonyi, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Cross River are forecast to see morning showers followed by heavier rains later in the day.

NiMet advised residents in flood-prone communities to remain alert, avoid driving during heavy downpours, secure loose items, and take precautions against strong winds and cold nighttime temperatures. The agency also urged the public to disconnect electrical appliances during storms and avoid seeking shelter under trees.

For airlines, NiMet recommended obtaining real-time, airport-specific weather reports to ensure safe flight operations. Updates and detailed forecasts are available on the agency’s official website, www.nimet.gov.ng.
