Real Madrid confirmed on Tuesday that winger Rodrygo Goes has suffered a serious knee injury, which is expected to rule him out of this summer’s World Cup with Brazil
In a statement, the club said: “Following the tests carried out today on our player Rodrygo by Real Madrid’s medical services, he has been diagnosed with a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament and a tear of the lateral meniscus in his right leg.”
The 25-year-old sustained the injury while coming on as a substitute in Madrid’s 1-0 home loss to Getafe on Monday. Although he remained on the pitch at the time, medical examinations on Tuesday revealed the full extent of the damage.
Rodrygo had only recently returned from a month-long absence due to tendonitis.
With the forward sidelined, Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti will be unable to include him in the squad as the five-time World Cup winners aim for a sixth trophy in the United States this summer.
Real Madrid will also feel the impact, especially as French star Kylian Mbappe is currently out with a knee sprain. Manager Alvaro Arbeloa now has just three fit attackers—Vinicius Junior, Gonzalo Garcia, and Franco Mastantuono—ahead of next week’s Champions League last-16 clash against Manchester City at the Santiago Bernabeu.
